Echo & Narcissus

The Roman poet Ovid gave us the characters Echo and Narcissus, represented here by the cabinet and mirror, respectively.

Echo was complicit in a plot to trick Zeus's wife, Hera.  Upon learning of the trick, Hera cursed Echo so that she could only repeat the last words spoken by someone else, and no words of her own.

A chance encounter with Narcissus in the woods sealed Echo's fate to never be seen again - only heard repeating someone else's words.
